Is Education a Profession… or a Calling?

Some careers are chosen.

Some callings are inherited.

For many years, I never really asked myself that question.

Education was simply part of everyday life in our family.

It was present around the dinner table, in our conversations, in the values we were taught, and in the deep conviction that teaching is about far more than delivering knowledge.

A great educator helps young people discover who they are.

They build confidence.

They encourage curiosity.

They inspire ambition.

Above all, they help shape lives.

Looking back today, I realise that my vision of education did not emerge by chance.

It is the result of a family story that spans almost one hundred years.

A story that began in 1926, in a small village school in the Swiss canton of Valais.

Where It All Began

In 1926, my grandfather, Maurice Micheloud, was the headmaster of a public primary school while also teaching his own class.

At that time, teachers occupied a unique place within Swiss communities.

They were far more than classroom instructors.

They were educators, mentors, trusted advisers and, quite often, the moral pillars of their villages.

School was never just about academic learning.

It was about preparing young people for life.

Children learned responsibility, respect, perseverance, integrity and solidarity—values that would guide them long after they had left the classroom.

Those principles became the foundations of our family’s story.

Nearly a century later, they continue to inspire everything we do at Swiss School Consulting.

Because while education has evolved dramatically, one belief has remained unchanged:

Every child deserves an educational environment where they can discover their potential, develop confidence and build the foundations for a successful future.

That conviction has guided four generations of my family.

And it continues to guide my work today as an independent Swiss education advisor, helping international families navigate the world of Swiss private schools, Swiss boarding schools, and the broader landscape of Swiss education.

A Man Ahead of His Time

My grandfather devoted forty-five years of his life to teaching.

In an era when educational resources were limited, he managed multi-grade classrooms with more than fifty pupils of different ages learning together every day.

Such a responsibility required exceptional teaching skills, remarkable discipline and an extraordinary ability to adapt to every child’s needs.

Yet what impresses me most when I look back on his life is not only his dedication to education.

It is the breadth of his commitment to serving others.

For sixty-five years, he was the organist of his local parish.

For thirty years, he also directed the parish choir.

He was a musician, a local judge, an auditor for numerous community organisations and the founder of the Football Club of Grône.

Throughout his life, he devoted countless hours to strengthening the community around him.

To him, education never ended when the school day was over.

It continued through music.

Through sport.

Through culture.

Through civic engagement.

Through every opportunity to help people grow together.

Today, we often speak about educating the “whole child.”

Long before this expression became common, my grandfather was already living that philosophy.

He believed that education was not confined to a classroom.

It was a lifelong responsibility to help individuals become responsible citizens, compassionate neighbours and active members of society.

His extraordinary commitment was recognised with several distinctions, including the prestigious Bene Merenti Medal, awarded by the Vatican in recognition of his outstanding service to both the Church and the community.

When he passed away, Le Nouvelliste—the leading newspaper in the Swiss canton of Valais—paid tribute to him in a moving obituary, describing him as an exceptionally intelligent man, deeply humanistic and entirely devoted to the common good.

Every time I read those words, I understand a little better where the values that guide our family come from.

They continue to inspire my own vision of education—and, ultimately, the philosophy behind Swiss School Consulting.

A Calling Passed from One Generation to the Next

My grandfather’s commitment to education did not end with him.

The same passion naturally continued into the next generation.

My mother dedicated her entire professional life to education and vocational training.

She managed a continuing education centre and supported countless apprentices as they prepared for their professional careers.

Watching her work reinforced an idea that had already become deeply rooted in our family:

Education is not simply about teaching.

It is about helping people discover opportunities, develop confidence and build meaningful futures.

As for me, I chose to dedicate my own career to Swiss education.

Looking back, I now realise that this decision was probably less a choice than a natural continuation of a family story that had begun decades earlier.

Today, my son has also become a teacher.

Without any deliberate plan, four generations have followed the same path.

Four generations united by one simple conviction:

Education is one of the greatest legacies we can pass on to future generations.

Few professions create an impact that extends far beyond one lifetime.

Education does.

Every teacher influences hundreds of students.

Those students, in turn, shape families, communities, businesses and society itself.

When viewed from that perspective, education is never simply a profession.

It is an investment in the future.

It is also a legacy.

For my family, that legacy has now continued for almost one hundred years.

When a Calling Becomes a Profession

Growing up, I never felt that I was following a family tradition.

I was simply doing what felt natural.

From an early age, I understood that education is about far more than teaching a subject.

Its true purpose is to help each individual discover and develop their full potential.

Every student is different.

Every family has its own expectations.

Every educational journey is unique.

This belief naturally led me to pursue a career in education.

I first trained as a teacher before completing further studies at the University of Lausanne, specialising in Physical Education and Sports Science.

My objective was never simply to learn how to teach.

I wanted to understand how young people learn, grow, gain confidence and prepare for the future.

That perspective has remained at the heart of my professional philosophy ever since.

More Than Three Decades in Swiss Private Education

Over the past thirty years, I have had the privilege of experiencing Swiss education from many different perspectives.

I have been a teacher.

A school leader.

A member of executive management teams.

A board member.

A Vice President.

And a strategic advisor working alongside school owners, educational groups and international partners.

Each role has allowed me to better understand how outstanding schools are built—not only through academic excellence, but through leadership, shared values and a long-term vision.

Throughout my career, I have worked closely with students, parents, teachers, school boards and international organisations.

Every experience revealed another dimension of education.

Yet one principle remained constant.

Education is, above all, about people.

Buildings matter.

Curricula matter.

Accreditations matter.

But what truly defines a great school is its ability to help every student flourish.

That conviction has shaped every professional decision I have made.

One Important Realisation

After more than three decades in Swiss private education, one conclusion gradually became impossible to ignore.

Choosing a school should never be based solely on its reputation.

A school can be exceptional for one student…

…and completely unsuitable for another.

The most prestigious institution is not necessarily the one where a particular child will thrive.

The best educational outcomes are achieved when there is genuine alignment between:

  • the student’s personality;
  • the family’s aspirations;
  • the school’s educational philosophy;
  • and the environment in which the young person will live and grow.

Finding that balance is both an art and a responsibility.

It requires experience.

It requires independence.

And, above all, it requires listening before advising.

Over the years, this philosophy became the foundation of everything I do.

Why I Founded Swiss School Consulting

Throughout my career, I met families from every corner of the world.

Although they came from different cultures and backgrounds, they all asked remarkably similar questions.

Which Swiss school would be the best fit for our child?

What are the real differences between schools that appear equally prestigious?

Which curriculum will best suit our child’s personality, ambitions and learning style?

How can we avoid making a decision that may have a lasting impact on our child’s future?

I soon realised that families were not lacking information.

Today, information is everywhere.

Websites.

Rankings.

Brochures.

Social media.

Artificial intelligence.

What many families truly need is something very different.

They need perspective.

They need experience.

They need someone who listens before recommending.

Someone who genuinely understands the culture, strengths and unique character of each school.

Most importantly, they need an advisor whose only objective is to help them make the right decision.

That conviction led me to establish Swiss School Consulting.

Not simply as an educational consultancy, but as an independent Swiss education advisory firm built on experience, transparency and long-term trust.

Today, Swiss School Consulting supports international families in choosing the right Swiss school for their children. At the same time, we advise Swiss and British educational institutions, investors and education groups on international development, strategic partnerships, franchising, licensing, mergers and acquisitions.

Although these activities may appear different, they are all driven by the same belief:

His students all lived within a few kilometres of their village school.

Many of them will one day work in professions that do not yet exist.

Education can no longer focus solely on transmitting knowledge.

Its purpose is to develop curiosity.

And it is also why I remain convinced that Swiss education has an important role to play in preparing future generations for an increasingly interconnected world.

When I look at the photograph of my grandfather taken in 1926, I do not simply see a school headmaster.

I see a man who believed that education could change lives.

Nearly one hundred years later, I continue to share that same conviction.

Classrooms have changed.

Technology has transformed the way we learn.

Teaching methods will continue to evolve.

Artificial intelligence will reshape education in ways we are only beginning to imagine.

Yet one principle remains timeless.

Every child deserves an educational environment where they can develop confidence, discover their strengths and fulfil their potential.

If Swiss School Consulting exists today, it is not only because I have dedicated more than thirty years to Swiss private education.

It exists because it is built upon a family legacy that spans four generations, grounded in values that have been passed from one generation to the next for almost a century.

Looking back, I realise that education has never simply been our profession.

It has always been our way of making a meaningful contribution to society.

And that commitment continues to guide every family we advise, every school we support and every educational project we help bring to life.
