Choosing the right school for your child is an important decision, particularly when considering a private or boarding school abroad.
After more than 35 years in Swiss private education, first working within schools and now alongside international families, one thing feels essential to me:
A school’s reputation matters. But it isn’t enough.
Of course, families should consider academic programmes, results, university destinations, facilities, extracurricular activities and the overall environment.
But some of the most important elements when choosing a school cannot be found in a brochure.
The quality of communication.
Transparency.
How responsive the admissions team is.
A genuine willingness to understand the child and the family.
And above all, one simple question:
Does what the family actually experiences match what they were told before enrolment?
That is often where trust begins.
A School’s Reputation Matters — But It Is Only the Beginning
Reputation naturally plays a role when families are considering a school.
Its history, academic results, programmes, alumni and university destinations can all provide valuable information.
But a school is more than a name or a ranking.
An excellent school for one child will not necessarily be the right school for another.
A student’s personality, age, independence, academic ambitions, languages, interests and expectations of boarding life can completely change the way a school should be evaluated.

What Should You Look for Beyond the School Brochure?
School websites and brochures are useful for understanding academic programmes, facilities and the main characteristics of a school.
But they cannot tell you everything.
Before making a decision, a few questions can be particularly revealing:
Does the school genuinely try to understand your child?
Are the admissions team’s answers clear and transparent?
Is the school as comfortable discussing its limitations as its strengths?
How does the school communicate with parents once a child is enrolled?
Does the experience of families match what was presented before enrolment?
These factors are difficult to measure in a ranking, yet they can have a considerable influence on the future experience of both the child and the family.
Trust Begins Before Enrolment
The relationship between a family and a school often begins long before the first day of classes.
It starts with an initial conversation, a video call, a meeting with the admissions team or a school visit.
The way a school listens, answers questions and tries to understand a child can already tell a family a great deal.
For me, a good school does not simply try to convince a family to enrol.
It also tries to determine whether it is genuinely the right school for that child.
That honesty is one of the foundations of trust.
Why Visiting a School Still Matters
Today, international families can discover an enormous amount about a school from anywhere in the world.
Websites, videos, brochures, virtual tours and online meetings can all help families create an initial shortlist.
But nothing completely replaces visiting a school in person.
Walking through the campus, meeting the people, seeing the classrooms and boarding houses and experiencing the atmosphere allows families to compare what they imagined with what they actually experience.
A school that seemed perfect on paper may feel different once visited.
And another school that was initially not at the top of the list may unexpectedly feel exactly right.
